So, I had a successful run at plugging out from the Twittersphere for one whole day. And ooooh girl, duuude, the CLARITY. I kid, but the pregnant pause involved in not running to @Twitter to dump and spill every aching commentary onto my timeline, plus feeling personally responsible to read each bit of information from the people I follow has been revealing. Revealing in the sense that in taking a strategic break I have somehow given myself permission to absorb, process and figure out what to do with all that vital and frivolous information, with the goal being to translate…. The ALT/LIFE It is a great fact of the 21st Century, of our First World Lives that we are fortunate to have options and choices. The saying, “I didn’t have a choice,” doesn’t carry much weight in our daily discourse, because generally speaking, one has innumerable, if not, a plethora of choice. Much of where we end up, so to speak, depends on our choices and the angle at which we approach and view life’s more complicated scenarios. The decision to rant or rave; to look on the bright side, versus the negative side; to embrace an idea or a…. [ Read More ]

It’s been a long time coming…. You know the song. So I’ve been thinking. A lot. About you, about me, and everyone else in the world as defined by North American pop-cultural-tics. Really about the American way of Life and how we fit in, or don’t fit in as the case may be. Yes, increasingly, I’m interesting in this particularly insular and narrow point of view because this world is [in] my immediate future. I am but a mere blip on the screen, but feeling like I “belong” while feeling like the ultimate insider/outsider allows me a bit of flexibility…. [ Read More ]

Pop Cultural Criticism is the gift that keeps on giving. And not for anything, it is the opinions of the masses that fuel my desire to participate in ongoing discussions concerning matters of taste. I am by no means an “expert” on Taste, except that I sometimes know what I like, I know what I dislike, and given my professional experience with design visionaries, tastemakers, creative geniuses, style gurus and the like, I just may be in a position to substantiate an opinion or two on what might be considered good and “relevant.” This is not to say that my…. It’s been awhile since my last post–life happened and we had a non-stop party weekend– and I have to say that I’m happy to report that I am happy. Catharsis is like that. So is closure. I don’t believe for a moment that my beef with MTV will ever go away, but suffice it to say that I have made peace with that demon for now. In life, one must pick and choose their battles, and if we were blessed with forethought and ESP we would most certainly choose the battles that we could win, or at the very least,…. [ Read More ]

There is a curious scene in The Hills Season Finale Premiere where Heidi Montag, fresh from 10+ surgeries, sits across from her Mother on the sofa in a conspicuous tete a tete and asks her: “Do I look good?” The camera moves along the lines of her Mother’s comfortably folded body to her slightly lined, yet beautifully open and somewhat pained face as she deliberately pauses, casually flicks a swath of dirty blonde hair from her shoulders, and replies in a calm voice, “I think you should re-phrase the question.” To me this was a Moment. An unscripted, “natural” moment…. [ Read More ]

Yesterday I watched MTV Cribs with basketball player Carmelo Anthony, aka Melo. I watched the entire 10-15 minute segment with my jaw fully extended towards the floor, long, wide and incredulous. [Not a pretty picture]. My husband said that I also watched with a distinct sneer across my face, but since I don’t watch TV with a mirror on hand to catch my facial expressions, I can’t say for sure that I was sneering. According to him, this is apparently, how I often watch television. Call it an occupational hazard. I am, let it be said, the kind of person…. [ Read More ]
