Dear Jodie Foster: I Think You Should... stop sucking and blowing

In August, which is like 1000 years ago in media time, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison broke up because of… QUELLE HORREUR!… an infidelity on the part of Kristen Stewart. I won’t chide you if you don’t know “who” they are because if you don’t know who they are then you win! You win because you’ve successfully managed to steer clear of The Hype and live your life, and not the life the media are encouraging you to live. However, if on the off-chance that you haven’t been sucked into the media vortex of “other people’s lives” permit me to…. [ Read More ]

Is it just me or is anyone else tired of celebrities who seduce us into buying their schlock and then THEY give it to charity? On February 24, 2011, I came across a headline on my Twitter timeline which read: “Why are black pop stars performing at the behest of dictators?” Written by Lori Adelman, the story came courtesy of The Griot an African American online journal. I immediately clicked on the link and was surprised to find that not only had Mariah Carey, Beyonce, and Usher performed for Libyan dictator Mouammar Qaddafi, but they accepted a $1 Million paycheck…. In recent news, there has been a lot of talk about Courtney Love.  According to the will and might of sycophantic media behaviour, she seems to be experiencing a comeback, or is it a resurgence[?] in popular culture opinion. Why you ask? Well, because, it’s *that time* again. And lest you think there isn’t anything more important happening in our world culture—“George Bush Doesn’t Like Black People”— than the shenanigans of the former Mrs Kurt Cobain, also known as the Verbally Abusive Mother of Francis Bean, also known as a Successful Plastic Surgery Ambassador, also known as a Lifestyle Mental…. There’s a new fashion magazine controversy making the rounds in the blogosphere. I found this item courtesy of @Jezebel. Short on the heels of the Elle magazine Gabourey Siddibe blunder, up steps a fashion spread from Numero magazine in Europe. Here we have white model Constance Jablonski, face of Estee Lauder, bronzed out with a deep tan, a large afro and a black baby. The conversations spinning around the blogosphere go something like this: Black babies are used as propos and a fashion accessory.  And oh really, given the dearth of black models in editorials and runways and particularly at…. I am overwhelmed with a caveat. And yet it wasn’t always so. If I am able to put on my blinders, shut out the universe and focus on the task at hand, whatever it may be, then Life as I know it, is smooth. But being a mother of two, a wife, a daughter in law, a sister, plus a hyphenated so & so doesn’t always make the aforementioned life smooth. Being those Ideals and more, I find that the luxury of being simply me is just that, a luxury. But who am I? What do I value, What do…. [ Read More ]

ithinkyoushould. Follow the Uncomplicated Wisdom of a Certain 13 Year Old. So out in the blogosphere there is a 13 year “genius,” “prodigy” who writes a fashion blog called the Style Rookie. Her name is Tavi. She is a  precocious sort in that her fashion tastes are unlike that of the “average” teenager. She writes superbly, and she exudes a particular creative energy that is inspiring. And by all accounts she knows her stuff. She is the “rage” in the business of fashion writing/reporting, and in her early days, many questioned whether she was the brilliance behind the blog because…. [ Read More ]

Dear Oprah: How are you? I hope that this letter finds you well. [I can’t personally imagine what a day in your life is like, but please allow me to wish you peace and joy, and may I also offer my thanks]. Like many diverse individuals from all walks of life, I have written you many many letters over the years, immediately casting them away falling prey to an overwhelming sense of insecurity that what I was thinking, and what I was about to say didn’t matter. Not so this time… I have grown up with you, as have many…. [ Read More ]
