blackface-Numéro-jezebel-october2010

There’s a new fashion magazine controversy making the rounds in the blogosphere. I found this item courtesy of @Jezebel. Short on the heels of the Elle magazine Gabourey Siddibe blunder, up steps a fashion spread from Numero magazine in Europe. Here we have white model Constance Jablonski, face of Estee Lauder, bronzed out with a deep tan, a large afro and a black baby. The conversations spinning around the blogosphere go something like this: Black babies are used as propos and a fashion accessory.  And oh really, given the dearth of black models in editorials and runways and particularly at…. So, I had a successful run at plugging out from the Twittersphere for one whole day. And ooooh girl, duuude, the CLARITY. I kid, but the pregnant pause involved in not running to @Twitter to dump and spill every aching commentary onto my timeline, plus feeling personally responsible to read each bit of information from the people I follow has been revealing. Revealing in the sense that in taking a strategic break I have somehow given myself permission to absorb, process and figure out what to do with all that vital and frivolous information, with the goal being to translate…. ithinkyoushould-overwhelmed

Today I signed-off @Twitter. The reason? I am overwhelmed. In the last few weeks I have been consuming a steady diet of race/politics, and woman/politics with a few dashes of fashion here and there. Needless to say I’ve been a raging mess. I’ve been suspicious and untrusting, negative and cynical and supremely irritated. I have found joy in the faces of my children, but my true combative spirit is easily erupted onto adults. It hasn’t all been bad, because the result has been a sort of epiphany, and clarity on the things that were not so clear, or previously required…. [ Read More ]

[And If You Don’t Know What That Is, Recall the TV Show ER Back in the Day Where They Intubated Just About Every Person Who Entered The ER. It’s When A Breathing Tube is Inserted Into Your Mouth To Breathe For You. Not Pretty. But Literally Life-Saving]. This past Thursday after a full day at school, my husband and I [and our 2 ½ year old], drove our 5 ½ year old daughter to the emergency department of our local hospital for asthma treatment. She had not been feeling well all day at school, and had apparently taken ill shortly…. [ Read More ]

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m having an absolute blast a on Twitter and in the Blogosphere. It’s been nothing short of amazing. I know, I say that a lot. If everything just happens to be “amazing,” what isn’t? But I can honestly say without a doubt, that these online communities are inspiring, and the concentrated blocks of time that I am able to spend on the Internet has been an “amazing” educational experience all its own. In fact, it’s been like Continuing Education for me. I’m a self-confessed lesson-learner-student-of-everyday-life. Each day, I am inclined to open up my…. [ Read More ]

I am overwhelmed with a caveat. And yet it wasn’t always so. If I am able to put on my blinders, shut out the universe and focus on the task at hand, whatever it may be, then Life as I know it, is smooth. But being a mother of two, a wife, a daughter in law, a sister, plus a hyphenated so & so doesn’t always make the aforementioned life smooth. Being those Ideals and more, I find that the luxury of being simply me is just that, a luxury. But who am I? What do I value, What do…. [ Read More ]
